What is tank foam filling?

Foam filling is a method used to safely decommission a fuel tank by filling it with foam to absorb any hydrocarbons – making it safe, easy to store or remove, and reusable in the future.

What is the process of tank foam filling?

Our engineers will survey your site and fuel tank before uplifting your old fuel and injecting the foam through a small opening in your tank. Unlike other decommissioning methods, such as concrete filling, foam filling does not require degassing beforehand. Our team use RG22 hard foam that provides additional flexibility as it can be easily removed, which means the tank can be dispose of or stored for future use. Once completed, you’ll receive a certificate from us stating that your tank(s) are safe in situ.

We offer end-to-end project management for all fuel-related needs, meaning we can uplift any remaining fuel before decommissioning your tank, so you don’t need to worry if you have fuel left in your tank beforehand – we can even purchase your fuel off you if it’s still usable.

Foam filling has many significant benefits over concrete filling, making it the perfect solution for most businesses. The advantages of foam filling over concrete filling include:

Foam is lighter than concrete

A foam filled tank weighs approximately 25kg per 1000L which is far lighter than concrete. This means it’s much easier to remove and takes less specialist equipment to maneuver. Concrete filled tanks often require more planning and manpower, and for this reason, is mainly used for tanks that are underground.

Foam filling provides greater flexibility than concrete

While concrete filling is a viable option, it’s a permanent solution to decommission a tank. Foam filling, however, can be both a permanent and temporary solution due to the fact the foam can be removed in the future. If you’re unsure whether you may need to put the tank back into use, foam filling gives you the choice of using the tank again should you need to.

Foam filling is more cost-effective per cubic metre than concrete
